Platter
Swift 6 · SwiftUI
Your drive’s health, one click away.
Drive health in your menu bar, plus a dual-pane file manager. Native macOS with IOKit and smartctl.
The problem
SMART data is hard to read, and many USB drives hide it completely.
What it is
Platter is a native menu bar app. A small ring opens a popover with drive health, temperature, endurance and live read and write activity, and a dashboard goes deeper. Everything stays on your Mac: no accounts, no analytics.
Key features
- A menu bar ring and popover with health, temperature, endurance and read/write activity
- A dashboard with Overview, SMART, History, Storage, Diagnostics and Notes
- Local history: trends, first-seen baselines and events
- Benchmarks, SMART tests and schedules, and read-only surface scans
- A dual-pane file manager
Stack
Engineering challenge
Reading drives that don’t want to be read.
USB and Thunderbolt enclosures often can’t pass SMART data through. Platter finds every physical drive on its own, then reads health through a swappable provider, so a drive stays listed even when its bridge says nothing. Raw-disk access means the app is unsandboxed, so its optional helper checks code signatures both ways and speaks over a restricted XPC interface.
