What it is

Notes that stay yours.

The problem

Most notes apps want an account and keep your notes on their servers.

Why I built it

Nox comes from a problem I deal with every day: notes. I use Granola for meetings, Obsidian for AI workflows and agent connections, Apple Notes for groceries, and I carry a notebook to every lecture, which makes my backpack heavy. I hate switching between all of them. So I decided to be Productive Lazy and build Nox: one app with everything in it. It’s more convenient and better for my workflow. Nobody likes watching one show on Hulu and switching to Netflix for the next.

The app

Nox is a free note-taking app with no account. Your notes are a plain folder of Markdown files on your own device, so any other editor can open them. There is no server, nothing to sign into, and no company holding your data.

Key features
  • A vault of plain Markdown files, with wikilinks, backlinks and a graph view
  • Split panes, tabs, canvases and drag-and-drop between notes
  • One Record button captures your mic and Mac audio into a transcript card inside the note
The hard part

A Markdown editor Flutter doesn’t have.

Flutter has no editor on the level of CodeMirror, and the rich-text packages rewrite your file when they save it. Nox edits the real Markdown text, styles it in place, and keeps each file’s line endings byte for byte. Typing in Vietnamese and CJK, and keeping long notes fast, are the tricky parts.
