Nox
Flutter · Dart
Notes that stay yours.
Local-first Markdown notes. Your notes stay as files on your device, with split panes, canvases and one Record button for meeting transcripts.
The problem
Most notes apps want an account and keep your notes on their servers.
What it is
Nox is a free note-taking app with no account. Your notes are a plain folder of Markdown files on your own device, so any other editor can open them. There is no server, nothing to sign into, and no company holding your data.
Key features
- A vault of plain Markdown files, with wikilinks, backlinks and a graph view
- Split panes, tabs, canvases and drag-and-drop between notes
- One Record button captures your mic and Mac audio into a transcript card inside the note
Stack
Engineering challenge
A Markdown editor Flutter doesn’t have.
Flutter has no editor on the level of CodeMirror, and the rich-text packages rewrite your file when they save it. Nox edits the real Markdown text, styles it in place, and keeps each file’s line endings byte for byte. Typing in Vietnamese and CJK, and keeping long notes fast, are the tricky parts.
